Dutch Liable for Srebrenica Massacre
Almost two decades after Srebrenica massacre, a Dutch court has found Netherlands liable for the killing of more than 300 Bosnian Muslims in 1995, ordering the nation to pay compensations for the families of the Muslim victims.
“Dutchbat should have taken into account the possibility that these men would be the victim of genocide and that it can be said with sufficient certainty that, had the Dutchbat allowed them to stay at the compound, these men would have remained alive,” the court was quoted by Deutsche Welle on Wednesday, July 16.
Out 8,000 Bosniaks killed in 1995, who were taking refuge in UN camp controlled by Dutch peacekeepers, Netherlands was found guilty over the killing of only 300 of them by Serbs.
Though knowing the war crimes of Serbs and that Muslims would be killed, Dutch peacekeepers (Dutchbat) deported the 300 Bosniaks outside the base, leaving them in the woods where they were massacred later.
“At the moment that the men were sent away, Dutchbat knew or should have known that the genocide was taking place and therefore there was a serious risk that those men would be killed,” said judge Peter Blok, Reuters reported.
However, the Dutch state was not found liable for the killing of thousands of Bosnian Muslims who left the camp and fled to “the woods in the vicinity of Srebrenica”.
Brought by the “The mothers of Srebrenica”, the case by thousands of victims' families failed to make Netherlands liable of the deaths of more than 8,000 Bosnian Muslims slain in Srebrenica.
